Description
Mary Pierse (editor), George Moore: Artistic Visions and Literary Worlds. Cambridge: Scholars Press, 2006. GBP 39.99. The first, and perhaps the pivotal essay in this collection, is by Adrian Frazier. It deals with Moore's value as a writer. 'Value' is a strange word to use. We do not, as a rule, employ it in assessing major writers. One would not consider the 'value' of William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens, William M. Thackeray, Seamus Heaney, or T.S. Eliot. Their value is a reality. Their place in literature, fiction, poetry may be debated, but almost certainly in terms other than the evaluation of the contribution, especially in the phrase used by Frazier, 'The Question of Moore's Value'. And this is so even before one puts together the full title of the essay: '"I no longer underrate him": The Question of Moore's Value'.
